Department visit at Het Collectie Centrum with Suzanne van Leeuwen guided by Irma Földényi

December 2022

During the visit at Het Collectie Centrum Suzanne van Leeuwen, Curator and Conservator of Jewellery, Rijksmuseum, showed the students around in the Depot of the Rijksmuseum. First, Suzanne gave an introduction on the building,, which was followed by a tour through the different storages and infrastructures. The first depot room we visited was 17-18th century silverware with larger objects and jewels. The second depot was the collection of Dutch art historian Marjan Unger. Marjan has been a collector throughout her life, and before passing away, she donated her entire collection to the Rijksmuseum. This donation made possible for artists from the 1970’s onward to be present in the national collection, and includes many generations of Rietveld students.

Brooches for teachers retiring from Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
Inspired by an empty grey room in basic year program. Teachers and students bring together infinite possibilities in the empty space. The word empty suggests infinite possibilities instead of nothing.

Monday Evening Lecture by Veronika Fabian

Monday 14th November 2022 17:30 FedLev auditorium

Veronika Fabian is a British-Hungarian jewellery artist who gravitated towards metal art and jewellery after studying economic policy. Veronika’s work is informed by her own journey from complex analysis to handcraft, economics to design. Her work investigates the impact of contemporary capitalism on daily life and personal identity, both of which play a vital role in her collections.

Veronika often works with chains transforming them while experimenting with different techniques. Using jewellery as an intermediary between the self and society she also has been rethinking everyday items recently to explore the relationship we have with objects.

In the lecture Veronika will walk us through her route towards jewellery, starting from the early projects during her studies until the most recent works, to show how her artistic approach and creative process evolved over these years.
